Why do children need foster care?

Fostering is a way of providing a family environment for children who cannot live with their own parents. As a foster carer, you will provide the support for a child at a time when they need it the most and help them to build a better future for themselves. People who foster are ordinary people who understand, and can meet, the needs of children.

Calderdale foster carers provide quality care to children from as young as birth through to adulthood, so it’s vital that we recruit people like you to make a difference. Foster care may be required for just a few days, weeks, months or longer term.

Children and young people are in care because of their family situation. Foster carers look after children so that families have time to sort out their difficulties such as illness or family stress, but sadly, many foster children will have suffered abuse or neglect at some point in their lives.

Children who need foster care come from all areas across the borough. As such, Calderdale Council needs to recruit foster families from the towns and surrounding areas of Brighouse, Elland, Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and Sowerby Bridge.

Our aim is to help keep children and young people within Calderdale as local as possible to their families, friends and schools.

Why become a foster carer?

As a foster carer you will make a big difference to a child’s life. Fostering will help a child learn, grow and develop, ultimately making a significant difference to their life. Children will always remember and value the best care they receive. That makes fostering one of the most rewarding jobs you can do.

We will offer you a full range of support and guidance, as well as a financial package that will help you plan your daily life.
