Recycling and household waste sites
Rules and regulations
Visitors to Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) need to adhere to certain rules:
- Pedestrians are not allowed to enter the sites: all access to the sites must be vehicular. Pedestrians wishing to deposit waste or recylate at any HWRC should stand at the entrance to the site and attract the attention of one of the site attendants, who will take the items from the person and deposit in the appropriate container. There are also restrictions as to what vehicles are allowed to enter the sites; see Vehicle permit scheme.
- Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) give residents the ability to recycle and dispose of unwanted domestic and household waste free of charge. Household waste is anything you would put in a removal van if you were to move house.
- Brick and rubble is classed as construction and demolition waste and is therefore not accepted as a recyclable material. However, we will accept this in small quantities - 6 standard sized builders bags only (20kg maximum capacity) per year.
- Plasterboard: due to the amended Acts of the Landfill Directive (2008/09) on the safe disposal of 'gypsum', this can no longer be deposited in the brick and rubble skip. It can be deposited, in small quantities, in dedicated skips at the Brighouse and Todmorden sites.
- HWRC's are not licensed to accept trade waste or waste arising from any commercial or business activity.
- All HWRC's operate a Vehicle permit scheme.
We are currently looking at ways to improve the Rubbish, waste and recycling information on the Calderdale Council website.
