Areas of activity
Introduction
The work of the Sustainable Development team arises from the Council’s commitments to the local community and to central government, via the Calderdale Futures Plan|
and the Local Area Agreement (LAA). The Sustainable Development team also takes the lead on four of the new National Indicators (NIs). These are:
- NI 185: CO2 reduction from local authority operations
- NI 186: Per capita reduction in CO2 emissions in the local authority area
- NI 188: Planning to adapt to climate change
- NI 194: Air quality: % reduction in NOX (nitrous oxide) and primary PM10 (particulate matter) through local authority operations.
The Sustainable Development team is also responsible for developing an Environmental Management System for the Council, which acts as an umbrella project for all the work areas in which the team is involved. The Council’s Environmental Policy represents its commitment to improving environmental performance across a range of activities.
The Sustainable Development team is currently working on projects in the following areas:
- Carbon management in schools
- Energy efficiency
- Environmental design & construction
- Renewable energy
- Sustainable procurement
- Sustainable travel
- Waste and recycling.
