Environmental permits

Introduction

The Council is responsible for issuing permits to operators who carry out certain types of industrial process. The legal framework for this is the  Environmental Permitting Regulations 2007|External link, which came into force in April 2008, replacing the Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations 2000.

The Council has issued permits to over 90 installations in Calderdale for processes ranging from burning waste oil to melting metal in foundries.  The permits contain conditions intended to prevent or minimise pollution by using the best available techniques. Most of the permits are for small installations called 'Part B' installations, and these deal only with air pollution, and not noise or water pollution. Some of the permits are for larger installations and cover air, water and land pollution as well as noise, energy use and waste.  These are known as Part A(2) installations.
