Air quality management areas

The Council monitors certain forms of air pollution across the Borough. If a specified pollutant exceeds or is likely to exceed a level set by the Government then the Council must declare that area as an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA). This is a measure to protect the general population, whereas individual health concerns should always be referred to one's doctor.

Already there is careful consideration of applications for planning permission for developments in or near AQMAs.

As at August 2007 Calderdale has declared six AQMAs, because of the level of Nitrogen Dioxide in those areas.

Within one year of declaring an AQMA the Council will publish a “Further Assessment”. This includes the results of any further investigations undertaken by Environmental Health Services to find out more about local pollution levels.

Within 18 months of declaring an AQMA the Council will publish an Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) containing measures the Council may employ to try to reduce local pollution. In Calderdale AQAPs for the areas declared so far are being devised by Highways Services, because much of the pollution is thought to come from road traffic.

The Council will consult on these reports via Calderdale Engage and thereafter will place copies here for future reference.
