12 Environmental Protection
Introduction
12.1 Environmental protection is a wide-ranging topic covering issues of both global and local significance. Environmental issues feature high on the public agenda and expectations of a cleaner, greener environment and a better quality of life are increasing. The need to mitigate the effects we are having on local and global environments is an essential element in achieving sustainable growth.This section complements the the sustainable development objectives defined in Section 3 of the UDP, by:-
- ensuring new development does not significantly add to pollution levels;
- reducing current pollution levels where possible;
- ensuring new development does not add to the problems of flood risk;
- encouraging the generation of electricity from renewable sources and contributing to UK and regional targets in relation to renewable energy and climate change; and
- encouraging the efficient use of energy.

PROTECTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY
DEVELOPMENT SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE MANAGEMENT OF POLLUTION, HAZARDS AND FLOOD RISK THROUGH RELEVANT CONTROL MEASURES AND RISK MINIMISATION.
