Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)
Made under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 by the local planning authority to protect trees of importance for amenity, landscape and nature conservation. Approval from the Council is required for felling or pruning a tree subject to a TPO. Application must be made to the Local Planning Authority on a standard application form giving details of tree species, a plan of its location and the nature of the work to carried out. There are some exceptions - for example when a tree is dead, dying or dangerous and action needs to be taken quickly for safety reasons. In these instances you can get further advice by contacting Development Control or the Community Services Countryside and Forestry team on 01422 393212. Detailed guidance is available in Tree Preservation Orders: A Guide to the Law and Good Practice|
from the Department for Communities and Local Government.
