The Historic Environment Sector of this Department has responsibility for the identification, conservation and enhancement of the historic built environment in England. The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has a duty to compile lists of buildings of special architectural or historic interest (Listed Buildings). This it does in conjunction with English Heritage, the Government's statutory adviser on these matters. The DCMS also has responsibility for Ancient Monuments and processes requests for Ancient Monument Consent.
