Units at the Piece Hall

The Piece Hall, Halifax

Location

The Piece Hall is in Halifax town centre and adjoins the Woolshops Shopping Centre and car park. It is a large town square, with entrances from Woolshops, Westgate and Horton Street / Church Street.

It is within 150m of Halifax Railway Station and Eureka! The National Children's Museum|External link.

General

The Halifax Piece Hall was built for the sale of woollen and worsted cloth, and first opened on New Years Day 1779. Each of the 315 doors on the colonnades originally led to a small room where 'Pieces' of hand woven cloth were sold, hence the Hall's name.

The building, restored in 1976, is a Grade I Listed Building and is promoted nationally and internationally. The outdoor market is held every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and occasionally Sundays. In addition, a varied programme of entertainment is provided for visitors mainly free of charge. However, for larger events a small admission price is sometimes charged.

As well as the shops and markets, the Piece Hall contains Halifax Tourist Information Centre and a major Art Gallery, with a changing programme of exhibitions.
