Is your property at risk of flooding?

  1. To check if your property is at risk of river flooding, visit the Environment Agency|External link website and type in your postcode to find out if you are at risk.
  2. If you are in a flood warning area, sign up to free flood alerts at Floodline 0845 988 1188.
  3. Check your insurance policy to see what flooding cover you have. Remember that flooding does not just come from rivers. If you want advice on other forms of flood risk and who is responsible for addressing it please contact Streetcare on 0845 245 7000 for a call back from the Council's drainage engineers.
  4. Talk to your neighbours about how you could work together in the event of a future flood.

Almost 11,000 properties in the country are at risk of river flooding from a 1-in-100 year event. However, even if your home is not directly at risk from river flooding, the flooding of June 2007 showed how we can all be affected by the consequence of an unexpected event. Flash floods, usually resulting from torrential rain over a short period of time, have been the cause of much of the disruption here in Calderdale.

The Environment Agency has produced 3 flood guides giving practical advice on preparing for a flood and what to do during and after a flood. The guides are currently available at local Environment Agency events, by telephone order to Floodline 0845 988 1188, and on their website, Flood - What you can do|External link.

In addition the Environment Agency has produced some information highlighting what can be done to reduce flood damage to your home or business premises: How to reduce flood damage|External link.
