Species Audit

Vascular plants

Although Calderdale supports relatively few botanical species of national concern, key species such as Floating Water Plantain, Needle Spike-rush and Ivy-leaved Crowfoot can be found. While there are few national priorities, there is a long list of local, native vascular plants occurring at a few sites within the District. Such localities often represent relatively undamaged, semi-natural habitats and their conservation, along with the associate habitat, is of high concern.

Some species are believed to be under recorded while others are believed to be extinct within the district. Fieldwork will be needed to establish the current status of these. Several species are apparently extinct now, but would merit checking to confirm their absence. Some species such as the Autumn Crocus have been introduced into the area but its history and association make it of conservation importance and worthy of selection as a Priority Species.
