Local Authority National Type Approval Confederation

The Local Authority National Type Approval Confederation (LANTAC) system of approval was adopted in May 1987 following a similar system of approval that had developed on a regional basis since 1984.

This 'nationally' adopted system gives an applicant freedom to submit applications with other authorities without the necessity to have the plans rechecked again after the initial plan check with the first authority.

LANTAC is the only organisation in the UK which specialises in developing fast track routes through the regulatory procedures for standard buildings, modular buildings or building systems. All local authorities throughout England and Wales are members of LANTAC. Building Regulation Approvals issued under LANTAC are of two kinds, generically described as either Type Approval or System Approval.

System approval

System Approval is suitable for building systems, which are capable of producing a variety of different buildings using standard components and construction details. A brochure is available on request from Calderdale Building Control Services which briefly explains the benefits of using the unique range of schemes developed by LANTAC to meet the needs of housebuilders, clients, architects, design engineers and system building manufactures.

Type approval

Type Approval is suitable for both complete building designs and for standard building modules, which are repeated in different areas. Permanent variations to such designs can be included with a type approval.

If you are a housebuilder building a range of house types in different Local Authority areas, the LANTAC National House Type Approval Scheme has special benefits for you. The Scheme has been developed with the help of national and regional housebuilders.

All you need to do to obtain LANTAC approval is to request Calderdale to type approve your house designs. You can use a standard application form, just make it clear you are applying for LANTAC Approval. Alternatively, you can approach any local authority to type approve your range of house designs without necessarily having a particular site in mind. In either case, Building Control Services will check your plans under the LANTAC scheme procedures, and a house type approval certificate will be issued for each house design once it complies with Building Regulations.

Once a certificate has been issued, using it is just as easy. You simply deposit the plans in the normal way, attaching a copy of your type approval certificate. Building Control Services will not check type approved plans, and will only look at site-related matters, which are not covered under the LANTAC certificate.

If you decide to use a Building Notice, LANTAC approved plans can be left with Building Control Services to give added assurance that your design does comply with Building Regulations.

If you are a major housebuilder with a large number of different house types you may wish to consider becoming partnered with one local authority. The advantage of this arrangement is that you will have a single point of contact for all your house type approvals, with expert advice on Building Regulations and other related legislation on hand whenever you need it.

Calderdale Building Control Services are able to offer LANTAC approval for anything that will be repeated on any other building design or construction.

The most used LANTAC approval is 'Type' approval used for houses, but Calderdale Building Control Services are able to provide all other LANTAC approval schemes, which are:
