Physical education and school sport
Introduction
PE and school sport events, competitions, meetings, training courses and opportunities are organised by a wide range of partners across Calderdale including Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School and Sports College, Brooksbank School Sports College, SSCO (School Sports Co-ordinators), Leisure in Action and the Calderdale School Sports Association.
There has been unprecedented investment in PE and school sport over the last few years. In the last academic year, 84 per cent of young people in Calderdale aged 5-16 received two hours of high quality PE and school sport within and beyond the curriculum. This is in line with our West Yorkshire neighbours and a 38 per cent improvement since this data was first collected in 2004.
76 schools (74 per cent) received either the Activemark or Sportsmark award. This national award was given to schools where 90 per cent or more pupils across the school were doing at least two hours high quality PE and school sport a week.
Our next challenge is to offer all 5-16 year olds five hours of high quality physical education and sport. In addition, all 16-19 year olds will be offered more opportunities to participate in three hours of sport.
Through the School Sport Partnerships young people in Calderdale are able to extend their physical education experiences in activities such as Street Dance, Circus Skills and Frisbee. These types of activities are engaging those who do not enjoy traditional team sports.
From April 2008, additional funding from Sport England is available to Calderdale to extend activity through a wide variety of providers and approaches to support the government's ambition for each child to have access to five hours a week by 2012. This should be made up of two hours of physical education within the curriculum and three hours offered on school sites or in the community.
In addition, Continued Professional Development in Physical Education continues to be offered through the Local Delivery Agency, with training opportunities being accessed by over 300 staff working in and with schools during the last academic year.
