Building schools for the future
Savile Park Primary School
At Savile Park Primary School the design was developed in a way that did not compromise the existing security inherent in the present perimeter treatment, but that orientated the building to maximise external play space and natural lighting. The treatment of the external wall in this location reflects the present rhythm of fence posts and railings, and relate to the urban nature of the adjacent residential properties. The height of the building is lower than the former Haugh Shaw School building, now removed, to lessen the impact on nearby houses.
The two-storey concept naturally allowed a split between Key Stage One and Key Stage Two classrooms, and this has been incorporated by means of accommodating younger children at the lower level where there is direct access to the hall, and years 3 to 6 at the upper level. External play space is available to these groups directly from their classrooms onto both levels of the site. Both areas are accessible to parents by means of ramps or steps from the existing point of access on Moorfield Street. A separate enclosed play area is available for Early Years children.
Key Stage Two pupils similarly have direct access to their classrooms, whilst also allowing access to their dedicated playground to the upper level of the site, elevated above the early years playground. The Key Stage One play area also houses the ball games area which is marked out within its own enclosing fence. Observation of both play areas is possible from the balcony outside the staff room, accessible only by adults.
A secure perimeter is ensured with the retention of the existing boundary walls and railings, with any present inadequacies closed up in a suitable manner. Once all staff and pupils have arrived by vehicle, the entrance gates are locked shut. Parents with pupils arriving on foot are encouraged to use the existing pedestrian access gate on Moorfield Street, though there is an additional pedestrian access from Eldroth Road. Similarly, after the start of the teaching day, the pedestrian access from Eldroth Road is locked. Access into the site is possible only via the existing pedestrian gate on Moorfield Street. Anybody entering the site from this location can be observed from any of the classrooms or staff accommodation, all of which face directly the entrance gate, thus affording maximum observation potential. CCTV coverage was provided to cover all entrances and in particular playground areas that are not visible from inside the building.
