Building schools for the future

Introduction

School building with pupils in the yardBuilding Schools for the Future (BSF) is the biggest-ever school buildings investment programme. The aim is to rebuild or renew nearly every secondary school in England.

Calderdale's BSF Programme aims to rebuild or renew its secondary schools over a period of 10 - 15 years. Far from being just another school building programme, BSF provides Calderdale with the opportunity to combine significant capital investment in state-of-the-art buildings and ICT facilities with a bold educational vision to transform teaching and learning and locate schools at the heart of their community.

Partnerships for Schools (PfS) was established in 2004 by the DCSF and Partnerships UK to deliver BSF, the capital investment programme that will help transform every single secondary school in England.

Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council successfully developed a five-school replacement scheme under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme.  The scheme was to replace:

Detailed information about the project at each of these schools is provided in this section. All of the schools concerned have reported dramatic change in behaviour and attendance; GCSE results have also improved.  Colleagues believe that behaviour at break times especially can be attributed to the provision of wide corridors, circulation space and recreation areas.

The cost of the scheme was £53.9 million; work commenced on site in July 2003 and was completed in April 2005.

The Authority is extremely proud of this successful and prestigious project.  It was so successful because of the fantastic team work within the whole of the feasibility and procurement stages.  The schools and councillors were involved at all stages, and sound reporting systems were put in place throughout the whole of the process.

All schools were involved in drawing up output specifications and fixed furniture and equipment requirements together with progress meetings.

The team comprised:

Technical Consultants: White Young Green Management Services
Project Advisers: Hewitt Freeborn Associates
