Specialist support services
The local authority has a number of services that support pupils with special educational needs. These are:
Special needs administration
Responsible for carrying out the authority's statutory or compulsory duties in assessing pupils, issuing statements of special educational need and ensuring annual reviews are carried out to comply with the Education Act 1996 and The SEN and Disability Act 2001. The service operates as the centre of co-ordination for issues relating to pupils with special educational needs.
Educational psychology service
Responsible for ensuring that pupils with special educational needs are identified assessed and appropriately provided for, and that all children and young people have maximum opportunity to learn the basic skills required for intellectual, personal, social and emotional development.
Sensory support service
Responsible for the support of sensory impaired pupils and young people in order that they may achieve their full potential in all areas of their development with the support of families, carers and educators. The service consists of two teams: the Visually Impaired team and the Hearing Impaired team.
Autistic spectrum disorder service
Responsible for providing high quality support to meet the range of needs of pupils with ASD throughout Calderdale.
Statement support and review service
Responsible for working with schools in order to support them in meeting the needs of pupils with a Statement of Special Educational Need. The service works to ensure the efficient and effective use of the annual review process and the post statement meeting, to advise the authority on the need to adjust, alter and redefine provision in order to maximise pupils' progress in school.
Behaviour support service
Responsible for working with schools and all other agencies to meet the needs of pupils with emotional, social or behaviour difficulties to ensure their continued access to appropriate educational provision.
