Other special educational needs provision
Some schools called non-maintained special schools, have been set up to provide for certain disabilities that only involve small numbers of pupils. There are also a number of independent schools that are approved for pupils with statements of special educational needs. If it is felt that a placement in one of these schools is appropriate for your child this will be discussed with you during the assessment.
Children under five
Children under five with special educational needs are educated in a wide range of settings in Calderdale. These include mainstream and special school nurseries, local authority day nurseries, family centres and other registered day-care providers such as pre-schools, playgroups, private day nurseries and accredited childminders.
The local authority provides a Portage service, which is a home-based teaching service and an advisory and support service for early-years settings. The service helps those children from birth to five years of age who:
- are falling behind in their 'milestones'
- who have a known syndrome which may affect learning
- who have a significant physical disability
- who have a recognised speech/language delay
- who are multiply impaired.
The local authority's SEN services also provides support for pre-school children with special educational needs.

Speech and language therapy service
The role of the Speech and Language Therapy Service is to work in partnership with education and parents to identify children with speech, language and communication needs. The service supports children either through a consultative approach or through timely direct intervention as appropriate. The service works with children and families/carers either in the home, clinic or in educational settings.
Occupational therapy and physiotherapy services
These services have a responsibility to provide advice, equipment and support to develop physical independence and physical access to the curriculum. The services work in a variety of settings including home, health centres, hospitals and schools.
