Special educational needs (SEN)
Introduction
Calderdale is committed to promoting achievement and learning for all. We believe that every child and young person should be given the opportunity to achieve their full potential. As part of this commitment, we aim to ensure that pupils with special educational needs:
- have their needs identified as early as possible
- receive education appropriate to their needs
- experience a broad and balanced curriculum, including full access to the National Curriculum
- are educated, wherever possible, in their local mainstream school
- receive support to enable them to contribute to decisions made about their education.
Educational provision for children with special educational needs
Many children with substantial learning difficulties who have a statement of special educational need will attend their local mainstream school with extra help provided by the Authority. The majority of children with statements attend mainstream schools in Calderdale.
A very small number of children may attend a special school, or resourced school. This is because they need specialist facilities or teaching which can only be delivered effectively by grouping a number of children with similar learning difficulties together.
In Calderdale all three special schools try to give all their pupils experience of mainstream education whenever this is possible and practical. The pupils usually go to their local school or a mainstream school near to their special school.
Framework for Inclusion
What are children entitled to from their school and local authority? This guidance aims to outline the basic entitlement of all pupils; clarify the entitlement of pupils at School Action and detail the entitlement of pupils with a statement of SEN and School Action Plus.
