Helping children with SEN
Local authorities, schools and early years settings have statutory responsibilities for special educational needs.
The local authority's role and responsibility
Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council is the local authority. It has a duty to plan strategically to meet special educational needs. The local authority is responsible for:
- policies and plans which plan and review special educational provision;
- assessing the needs of pupils who may need a statement of special educational needs;
- ensuring that the provision in a statement is being delivered;
- ensuring that the statement is reviewed on an annual basis;
- monitoring the performance of maintained schools and the authority's support services;
- identifying, assessing and making provision for pre-school children with special educational needs.
Schools and early years settings - SEN policy
Schools and early years settings must have a special educational needs policy. Schools must consider the regulations set out in the Code of Practice and report every year to parents on its success.
Schools and early years settings - roles and responsibilities
The Code of Practice provides guidance for schools on their roles and responsibilities for special educational needs in respect of the special educational needs co-ordinator, the governing body, the class teachers and the headteacher.
SEN provision
The local authority, schools and early years settings have responsibilities set out within the Code of Practice to identify and assess individual special educational needs and to make suitable provision to meet these needs.
