Educational psychology

Introduction

The local authority is responding to Every Child Matters| , and schools and services are expected to work increasingly proactively to prevent the social exclusion of a wide group of children.

School staff might therefore wish to involve a psychologist in addressing the needs of this group of pupils, for whom different approaches may need to be planned.

These might include groups of pupils who:

• are unhappy, including those with mental health difficulties
• are significantly withdrawn or quiet, including those with relationship difficulties
• are disaffected, for example by experience, economics, instability, social exclusion and so on
• are experiencing health difficulties (themselves or family members, both physical and mental health)
• are bullied or socially excluded
• are in public care
• have a transient family life and school experience
• are experiencing difficulties in attending (truanting or school-phobic)
• are reacting to bereavement and loss issue
• are associated with delinquency or drug taking
• are exceptionally gifted or talented
• have a range of special educational needs as defined in the SEN Code of Practice|
• have additional language or cultural experiences.
