Children with medical needs

Introduction

Young girl colouring a pictureChildren and young people with medical needs are those students who are unable to attend school because they are physically ill or injured or have mental health problems.

Access to suitable and flexible education appropriate to needs

Referral requests for teaching provision are usually made by the school or through the Education Welfare Service and should be accompanied by supporting evidence from a medical practitioner, preferably at consultant level.

On receipt of a referral we contact the parents / carers as soon as possible to consult them before teaching begins.

A mutually convenient appointment is then arranged for the initial meeting when individual provision, suited to the student's age, ability, needs and health, can be discussed.

Our students receive a minimum entitlement of five hours teaching per week either in the home, at an alternative venue or at their school, as part of a reintegration programme.

Wherever possible, we aim to provide the student with access to our teaching provision after the fifteenth working day off school.

Our aim is to establish effective links with the student's school, Connexions Personal Advisers and community health services, to cover cognitive and emotional issues that may affect learning.

Calderdale Council has a written policy statement on the implementation of its statutory duty to provide education for children and young people who are unable to attend school because of their medical needs.
