Play service

Summer playschemes

Boys in a huddle

Our free open access play sessions are for children and young people aged between 5-14 years are held across Calderdale in parks, open spaces and within schools and community buildings.

In the sessions, children and young people choose from a variety of activities, games and sports and are encouraged to help plan the sessions and choose the kind of activities that they would like to do. Sometimes our play sessions can get messy so please send children in appropriate clothing and protection from the weather, raincoats, sun cream and hats.

Although children and young people are supervised, they remain the responsibility of their parent/guardian and are free to come and go as they please. If you would like your child to stay on site until an appropriate adult collects them, please tell our play workers on site, they will be happy to assist with your requirements.

Our service aims to be inclusive, adapting activities and sessions that we deliver to meet the needs of all children wishing to attend and supporting all children and young people to join in to their fullest potential. If your child has disabilities or special needs, please let us know so that we can ensure that we meet their needs.

Details of activities and venues will be published in June 2012 but if you have any questions in the meantime please contact Calderdale Play Development Service on 01422 380995.

Who's it for?

Young people aged between 8 and 14 years old.

Children aged 5 to 8 years may attend for half of the first session.

Joining in the play schemes will help children develop a sense of respect for each other and support children to make a positive contribution and to enjoy and achieve through play.

Calderdale summer play schemes aim to provide an inclusive service for all children and young people. Please contact us if your child is disabled or has additional needs so we can work with you and your child in order to support them to access the best possible provision.

How much will it cost?

Our service is free so all children have the opportunity to play.

Who is supervising the activities?

All staff are Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) police checked and team representatives are permanent play workers within the Authority. All staff have attended a training programme on play work. Our schemes recognise the importance of positive and effective behaviour management, and promoting children's welfare, learning and enjoyment. We believe in developing a sense of respect for one another and support children in developing their social skills.

Children are encouraged to be involved in the development and implementing of club rules. We aim never to exclude children from our play schemes. Our scheme is committed to dealing with negative behaviour in a non-confrontational manner. Whenever possible, disruptive or challenging behaviour will be tackled collectively between staff and children in the scheme. We will not tolerate any form of bullying within our schemes.

Children need and want to take risks when they play. The Play Service aims to respond to these needs by offering children and young people stimulating challenging environments for exploring and developing their abilities. Play workers manage the balance of risk and safety without exposing children to unnecessary risks.
