Ward overview

Warley ward is situated on the western side of Halifax and contains several residential areas including Highroad Well, Warley Town, Norton Tower, Pellon, Moor End Road and Mount Tabor. It also contains high open countryside at Highroad Well Moor, around Mount Tabor and west of Norton Tower, overlooking the Luddenden valley.

Population

Area and population summary

Warley occupies an area of 705 hectares, or 2.7 square miles. The total population, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate for 2007, is 11,741. This is made up of 48.3% males and 51.7% females. The population density is 16.7 persons per hectare, and the number of electors in the ward in December 2009 was 8,589.

Population structure

The ward has a similar age profile to the district as a whole, with slightly more children. There have not been major changes in the age profile since 2001, although the proportion of young adults has increased.

Deprivation

Rates of benefit receipt are close to the district average, while fuel poverty and the proportion of pensioners receiving Pension Credits are somewhat below the district average.

Out of 7 areas in the ward, Warley had none in the worst 10% nationally on the Index of Multiple Deprivation, and 1 in the worst 11-20%, in the Rye Lane area.

Employment and Unemployment

Unemployment

The number of people in Warley unemployed and claiming benefits rose from 146 in January 2006 to 348 in January 2010, although the number has fallen since April 2009. Having peaked at 5.6% of the working age population, the rate is now 5%, close to the district figure but above the national rate of 4.3%.

The Annual Population Survey 2008 - 2009 showed that 8% of the ward's economically active population were unable to find jobs, just above the district figure of 7.6%.

Employment

The data on this page is about employment at workplaces in Warley Ward.

Over one third work in manufacturing, significantly higher than the district figure, while the Finance sector is very small.

There was a substantial rise in employment between 2006 and 2008.
