Ward overview
Ryburn ward is the second largest ward in Calderdale with an area of 24 square miles. It comprises large areas of open moorland and countryside either side of the wooded Ryburn valley. The main residential areas are along this valley from Rishworth in the south to Ripponden, Kebroyd and Triangle. The built-up area of Sowerby is at the northern edge of the ward and other settlements include Barkisland, Mill Bank and Krumlin. There is direct access to the M62 at Junction 22 and the ward is also served by the trans-Pennine roads from Halifax to Rochdale and Oldham.

Population
Area and population summary
Ryburn occupies an area of 6,165 hectares, or 23.8 square miles. The total population, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate for 2007, is 11,577. This is made up of 49.0% males and 51.0% females. The population density is 1.9 persons per hectare, and the number of electors in the ward in December 2009 was 8,787.
Population structure
The ward has a very similar age profile to the district as a whole. The proportion in the younger age groups has decreased, while the proportion in the older age groups has increased since 2001.

Unemployment
Unemployed claimant numbers in Ryburn rose from 112 in January 2006 to 273 in January 2010. This represented a rise from 1.7% of the working age population to 3.7%, but remains considerably below the district and national figurest. Changes since 2006 are illustrated in the table and chart below.

The Annual Population Survey results for 2008 - 2009 indicated that 4.6% of the economically active population of 6,100 were unable to find jobs. This is considerably lower than the national figure of 6.9% or the district's 7.6%.
Employment
The data on this page is about employment at workplaces in Ryburn Ward, which accounts for only about 3% of total employment in the district.
The most important sectors are Distribution, Hotels and Restaurants and Public Service. Total employment fell slightly between 2006 and 2008.

Looking in more detail at the change from 2006 to 2008 in employment by sector, as illustrated in the chart below, there have been a rises of 100 in Banking, Finance & Insurance, and in Public Services. Construction and Utilities has stayed about the same, and there have been losses of 200 in Distribution, Hotels & Restaurants, and 100 each in Manufacturing, and in Other Services including Transport. The overall result was a loss of 200 jobs.
