Ward overview

Rastrick ward is located in the south-east of the district between the M62 motorway and Brighouse town centre. It is mainly residential with open country to the south and east. It includes the neighbourhoods of Woodhouse, Toothill, Carr Green, Field Lane and Longroyde and a local centre in Church Street. There is an industrial area along Birds Royd Lane and Brighouse railway station is on the northern edge of the ward.

Population

Area and population summary

Rastrick occupies an area of 448 hectares, or 1.7 square miles. The total population, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate for 2007, is 11,525. This is made up of 49.4% males and 50.6% females. The population density is 25.7 persons per hectare, and the number of electors in the ward in December 2009 was 8,573.

Population structure

The ward has an older age profile than the district as a whole, and the population aged 60 and over has increased since 2001.

Health

Life expectancy in Rastrick is nearly three years higher for men, and one for women, than the district as a whole. Men's life expectancy has risen significantly in recent years.

Employment and unemployment

Unemployment

In Rastrick Ward, the number unemployed and claiming benefits rose from 148 in January 2006 to 350 in January 2010. As a proportion of the working-age population, unemployment was 2.1% in 2006 ( compared with 2.5% nationally and 2.6% in Calderdale) and 5.0% in 2010 (compared with 5.1% in Calderdale and 4.3% nationally. Thus the position of the ward had worsened in relation to both the district and national picture.

The 2008 - 2009 Annual Population Survey showed that 6.7% of the economically active population were unable to find jobs,compared with 7.6% in the district and 6.9% nationally.

Employment

The data on this page is about employment at workplaces in Rastrick Ward. Almost 75% of the workforce live outside the Brighouse and Rastrick area.

Over one third work in the Public sector and a quarter in Manufacturing, but the profile is similar to the district's. There was little change in the total between 2006 and 2008.

Looking in more detail at the change from 2006 to 2008 in employment by sector, as illustrated in the chart below, Manufacturing, and  Distribution, Hotels & Restaurants, have both stayed about the same, numbers employed in Construction and Utilities and in Banking, Finance & Insurance fell by 100 in each, but there were gains of 100 in Other Services including Transport, and 200 in Public Services, giving an overall gain of 100 jobs.
