Ward overview

Park is the smallest ward covering just under 1 square mile. It includes the densely built-up area to the west of Halifax town centre, lying to the north of the A646 road from Halifax to Burnley. It is a diverse community that includes the historic People’s Park and Calderdale College. It contains several industrial estates and retail parks on the edge of the town centre and on Pellon Lane. There are retail and local facilities at King Cross and in the Queen’s Road area.

Population

Area and population summary

Park occupies an area of 221 hectares, or 0.9 square miles. The total population, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate for 2007, is 14,771. This is made up of 50.3% males and 49.7% females. The population density is 66.8 persons per hectare, and the number of electors in the ward in December 2009 was 9,026.

Population structure

The ward has a much younger age profile than the district as a whole, but has changed little since 2001.

Ethnicity

In Park Ward, 55% of the population were from non-white ethnic groups in 2001, far above the district average. Over 70% of Calderdale's Asian population lived in the ward.

Country of birth

Two thirds of the population are UK born, and 30% Asian born. The proportion born in Eastern Europe has increased since 2001 but only accounts for just over 1% (this does not account for short-term migrants).

Health

Life expectancy is now around three years less in Park than in Calderdale, for both men and women. There has been little change in recent years.

Household incomes

About half of all households have an income below £20,000, compared with the Calderdale figure of 30%. A very small percentage has high household income.

  • very high proportions of households with children and of one-person households but low numbers of pensioner households compared with the district average

Deprivation

Rates of households in fuel poverty are much higher than the Calderdale average, as is the proportion of pensioners receiving Pension Credit.

7 of the 10 areas in Park Ward were in the most deprived 10% nationally on the Index of Multiple Deprivation, and a further 2 were within the worst 11-20%. Deprived areas are spread throughout the ward.

Employment and unemployment

Unemployment

The number of unemployed claimants rose in Park Ward from 440 in January 2006 to 698 in January 2010, a rise from 5.4% of the working-age population to 7.9% This unemployment rate is substantially above the district and national figures. Changes since 2006 are illustrated in the table and chart below.

The Annual Population Survey for 2008 - 2009 indicated that 16.5% of the economically active population were unable to find jobs - the highest ward figure in a district where the average is 7.6% and the national figure is 6.9%.

Employment

The data on this page is about employment at workplaces in Park Ward. Over two thirds travel into the ward to work.

Public service employment is above the district average and Finance well below average. There has been a major fall in employment in the ward between 2006 and 2008.
