Ward overview
Located to the west of Halifax, Luddendenfoot ward is the third largest in the district. There are extensive areas of open moorland through which Luddenden Dean and Cragg Vale cut wooded valleys. The largest town is Mytholmroyd and most of the industrial development and main communication routes are in the Calder valley which bisects the ward from west to east. The smaller settlements are Wainstalls, Booth, Midgley, Luddenden, Luddendenfoot and Cragg Vale.

Population
Area and population summary
Luddendenfoot occupies an area of 4,647 hectares, or 17.9 square miles. The total population, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate for 2007, is 10,226. This is made up of 48.8% males and 51.2% females. The population density is 2.2 persons per hectare, and the number of electors in the ward in December 2009 was 7,912.
Population structure
The ward population is rather older than the district as a whole, especially in the 45-74 age groups, while there are fewer infants and young adults. The proportion of children under 15 has dropped since 2001.

Health
Life expectancy for men and women in the ward is very similar to the district figure. There has been no significant change in recent years.

Employment and unemployment
Unemployment
The number of people unemployed and receiving benefit rose from 78 in January 2006 to 206 in January 2010. The percentage of the working age resident population receiving work-related benefits has risen from 1.3% in 2006 to 3.3% in 2010, but this has remained significantly lower than the district figure. Changes since 2006 are illustrated in the table and chart below.

The Annual Population Survey 2008 - 2009 shows that 4.6% of the 5,200 economically active population were unable to find jobs. This compares with 7.6% in the district and 6.9% nationally.
Employment
The data on this page is about employment at workplaces in Luddendenfoot Ward.
Over one third work in the Manufacturing sector, way above the district figure. Almost half the people working here come from the upper Calder valley.

Looking in more detail at the change from 2006 to 2008 in employment by sector, as illustrated in the chart below, the only significant changes were in Manufacturing, which lost 100 jobs, and banking, which gained 100 jobs, leaving the total jobs in the ward about the same.
