Ward overview
Illingworth and Mixenden ward is situated on the edge of Halifax, 3 miles north of the town centre. It has an area of 5.9 sq miles, much of it on high ground. The northern part is moorland and scattered farms, including the village of Bradshaw, a wind farm and Ogden reservoir which is an important recreational area. The southern part is mainly residential, the main settlements being Illingworth and Mixenden in the Hebble valley. The ward also contains an industrial area at Holmfield and three adjacent secondary schools that serve the town. The main access route is the A629 Halifax to Keighley road.

Population
Area and population summary
Illingworth and Mixenden occupies an area of 1,521 hectares, or 5.9 square miles. The total population, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate for 2007, is 13,259. This is made up of 48.8% males and 51.2% females. The population density is 8.7 persons per hectare, and the number of electors in the ward in December 2009 was 9,459.
Population structure
The ward has a similar age structure to the district as a whole, but has a higher proportion of 15 to 24 year olds, and slightly fewer aged 75+. The proportion of children under 15 has decreased since 2001, while that of young adults has risen.

Deprivation
Illingworth and Mixenden has a considerably higher proportion of households receiving benefit than the district average. Fuel poverty is below average levels and Pension Credit at about the district average.
The ward has two areas in the most deprived 10% nationally on the Index of Multiple Deprivation, and another area in the most deprived 11-20%. The more deprived areas are around Mixenden.

Employment and unemployment
Unemployment
The number of unemployed people claiming benefits rose from 306 in January 2006 to 579 in January 2010. Unemployment levels in Illingworth and Mixenden Ward are consistently higher than district and national percentages, 4% in January 2006 (district and national figures were around 2.5%) and 7% in January 2010, when the district figure was 5.1% and the national 4.3%.

The 2008 - 2009 Annual Population Survey gives a similar picture: 11.5% of the economically active population were unable to find a job,compared with a district figure of 7.6%.

Almost one third work in the Manufacturing sector and a further third in Banking and Finance. There has been a significant fall in the numbers employed in the Public Sector, accounting for an overall fall in employment between 2006 and 2008.

Looking in more detail at the change from 2006 to 2008 in employment by sector, as illustrated in the chart below, there has been little change in Manufacturing, Construction and Utilities, and Distribution, or Hotels & Restaurants. There have been job losses of 400 in Public Services and of 200 in Other Services including Transport, but a rise of 100 in Banking, Finance & Insurance. The overall change was a loss of 500 jobs.
