Ward overview
Hipperholme and Lightcliffe ward is in the east of Calderdale and covers approximately 4 square miles. It contains open countryside and wooded areas in the vicinity of Norwood Green along with the mainly residential built-up areas of Hipperholme, Lightcliffe, Bailiff Bridge and part of Hove Edge. Industry is located in Hipperholme and Bailiff Bridge. The ward is served by a network of important roads providing access to the M62 and neighbouring larger towns.

Population
Area and population summary
Hipperholme & Lightcliffe occupies an area of 1,056 hectares, or 4.1 square miles. The total population, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate for 2007, is 10,865. This is made up of 48.6% males and 51.4% females. The population density is 10.3 persons per hectare, and the number of electors in the ward in December 2009 was 8,684.
Population structure
Hipperholme and Lightcliffe has fewer children and young adults than the district average, and more older people.
These age groups show no major changes since 2001.

Life expectancy in Hipperholme & Lightcliffe has risen substantially in recent years for both men and women. Both exceed the district averages.

The following three tables are all taken from 2001 census data and cannot currently be updated. They show that the main ways in which Hipperholme & Lightcliffe Ward differs from Calderdale overall are:
- while there are low numbers of lone parents, overall the proportion of families with children is high
- the number of pensioner households is high, but the proportion of one-person (including single pensioner) households is low
- owner occupation rates are very high and the proportion of households in social housing and privately-rented housing is low

Unemployment
The number of people unemployed and claiming benefits has risen from 96 in January 2006 to 200 four years later. This represents 3% of the working age population, less than in all other wards, and significantly below the district figure of 5.1%. Changes since 2006 are illustrated in the table and chart below.

In terms of the economically active population of 5,500, figures from the Annual Population Survey for 2008 - 2009 indicate that 4.4% were unable to find jobs, compared with 7.6% for the whole district.
Employment
This page refers to employment at workplaces in Hipperholme & Lightcliffe Ward. About one third of the workforce also live in this or Northowram and Shelf Ward.
A substantial percentage work in the Manufacturing sector, far above the district average. Numbers in Finance and Public Services are relatively low. Total employment in the ward fell between 2006 and 2008.

Looking in more detail at the change from 2006 to 2008 in employment by sector, as illustrated in the chart below, the only sectors showing a change were Manufacturing, which lost 300 jobs, and Public Services, which lost 100, bringing the total jobs lost to 400.
