Ward overview

The Greetland and Stainland ward is semi-rural in character extending from its southern boundary adjacent to the M62 motorway to the valley of the river Calder and the edge of Halifax. The main settlements are Greetland, Stainland, Holywell Green, Norland, Sowood and West Vale. Much of the ward is open countryside with scattered farms and there is a small amount of industry in the valleys. The M62 is easily accessible and there is a good network of local roads.

Population

Area and population summary

Greetland and Stainland occupies an area of 1,924 hectares, or 7.4 square miles. The total population, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate for 2007, is 10,962. This is made up of 49.0% males and 51.0% females. The population density is 5.7 persons per hectare, and the number of electors in the ward in December 2009 was 8,441.

Population structure

The ward has a similar age structure to the district as a whole, but somewhat more people of working age and slightly fewer older people (60+).

Since 2001, the number of children as a proportion of the population has declined while numbers aged 60-74 have increased.

Health

Life expectancy in Greetland and Stainland has risen markedly since 2001, and is above the district average.

  • a high number of families with children (but not lone parents), and low numbers of pensioner and one-person households

Deprivation

Employment and unemployment

Unemployment

Unemployment measured by unemployed claimants in Greetland and Stainland Ward has risen from 92 in January 2006 to 229 in January 2010. This is a substantial rise but still represents only 3.2% of the working age population, below most wards and the district (5.1%) and national (4.3%) figures.

The Annual Population Survey for 2008 - 2009 shows that 4.1% of the economically active population of 6,200 are unable to find a job, compared with 7.6% in the district and 6.9% nationally.

Employment

The data on this page is about employment at workplaces in Greetland and Stainland Ward. About one third of all employees also live in this or Elland Ward.

Almost one third of employment is in the Finance sector, above the district average. Construction and Utilities employment is also high.

Employment in the ward rose slightly between 2006 and 2008.

Looking in more detail at the change from 2006 to 2008 in employment by sector, as illustrated in the chart below, Other Services including Transport and Public Services have stayed about the same, and numbers employed in Manufacturing, in Distribution, Hotels & Restaurants and in Banking, Finance & Insurance all rose by 100. The only fall was in Construction and Utilities, leading to an overall rise of 200 jobs in the ward.
