Ward overview
Elland ward is located in south-east Calderdale, includes Elland town itself and a number of smaller settlements such as Blackley, Upper and Lower Edge. The topography slopes steeply from the southern boundary to the river Calder and then rises to Elland Park Wood. The town has direct access to the M62 (Junction 24) and the main road (A629 Calderdale Way) from Huddersfield and the motorway to Halifax sweeps around the east of the town. The Lowfields Business Park is situated north-east of the town centre with access onto the Calderdale Way.

Population
Area and population summary
Elland occupies an area of 929 hectares, or 3.6 square miles. The total population, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) mid-year estimate for 2007, is 11,153. This is made up of 47.8% males and 52.2% females. The population density is 12.0 persons per hectare, and the number of electors in the ward in December 2009 was 8,607.
Population structure
The ward has a very similar age structure to the district as a whole. Changes since 2001 show small variations in the different age groups but no pattern emerging.

Health
Life expectancy in Elland is very similar to the district average, and has shown a strong rise over recent years.

- higher than average proportions of pensioner but low numbers of non-pensioner one-person households

Employment and unemployment
Unemployment
The claimant count figures show that unemployment in Elland Ward has risen significantly, from 136 in January 2006 to 382 four years later. This represents 5.7% of the working age residents, higher than the district and national figures. Elland Ward has experienced a steeper rise in unemployment than most other wards in the district. Changes since 2006 are illustrated in the table and chart below.

The results from the 2008 - 2009 Annual Population Survey confirm the problems by showing that 7.8% of the economically active population of 5,400 are unable to find a job, compared with 7.6% in the district and 6.9% nationally.
Employment
The data on this page is about employment at workplaces in Elland Ward. About one third of all employees live in Elland and Greetland and Stainland wards.
Elland is the second largest ward for employment in the district. Almost one third work in Manufacturing, the largest concentration in one ward, while relatively few work in Public Services. Employment within Elland increased slightly between 2006 and 2008.

Looking in more detail at the change from 2006 to 2008 in employment by sector, as illustrated in the chart below, Manufacturing has stayed about the same, numbers employed in Distribution, Hotels & Restaurants rose by 200, and by 100 in Banking, Finance & Insurance and in Public Services. There were falls of 100 in Construction and Utilities and in Other Services including Transport. The overall change was an increase of 200 jobs.
