Delivering local government online

Introduction

Electronic or e-Government is at the heart of the drive to modernise local government. It is about enhancing the quality and efficiency of local services.

Local councils are required to make all possible services available electronically by December 2005. E-Government is not just about delivering services online, it is also about using new technology to improve access to services in ways people will use including face-to-face and over the telephone.

In 2004, central government defined a range of 'priority outcomes'. These outcomes set out what citizens will be able to do as a result implementing e-Government. Local councils are required to meet the priority outcomes by March 2006.

Since 2001, each local authority has been required to submit to central government, an annual Implementing Electronic Government ( IEG) statement setting out progress against eGovernment targets. In 2005 IEG returns are required in July and December. The latest mid year Calderdale IEG was submitted on 18th July 2005.

The five West Yorkshire Council's (Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford) and West Yorkshire Police and Fire Services are working together on a number of e-Government projects. In March 2004, the Partnership set out an e-Government Strategy for West Yorkshire:
