New Campaign for a Cleaner Greener Calderdale

29 September 2005

Calderdale Council is launching a new anti-litter drive throughout the Borough.

Bold and bright adverts are already appearing in Courier Group newspapers and on billboards around Calderdale this week to make people think about the consequences and implications of dropping litter, with messages such as 'You Dirty Rat' and 'You Mucky Pup'.

The high profile advertising is just the beginning of a bigger campaign by Calderdale Council's Parks and Streetscene section to drive home messages about combating litter, dog fouling, fly tipping and graffiti.

There will also be regular news updates on Council clean-up initiatives, cash-prize competitions and various activities to get local people involved. Further details will be revealed in the coming weeks in the Halifax Evening Courier, the Hebden Bridge Times, the Todmorden News and the Brighouse Echo.

Calderdale Council Cabinet Member, Community Services, Cllr. Amanda Byrne says, "We currently spend just over £1.5 million per year on efforts to keep the streets and neighbourhoods of Calderdale clean and tidy - that's over £8 per person. The value of every pound we have to spend, however, could have an even bigger impact in our communities if our campaign hits home".

On behalf of Parks and Streetscene, John Bates comments, "We hope this campaign will build on a positive sense of pride in our community and respect for our day to day environment. To achieve the cleanest, greenest Calderdale, the support of local residents will really make a big difference to the existing efforts of our cleansing teams out on the streets".
