Regenerating Mytholmroyd
17 June 2008
Councillors are to decide whether to support plans for a new Mytholmroyd town centre.
Members of the Cabinet Committee will discuss the proposals at a meeting on Monday, June 23.
They are expected to agree to invest up to £100,000 in the £750,000 scheme which will also include the creation of an 'enterprise hub' at St Michael s Church Hall. The rest of the funding will come from the Church and Yorkshire Forward.
Under the proposals, drawn up as part of the Upper Calder Valley Renaissance Programme, the car park next to the church hall and part of Church Street would become the new town square. It would include the creation of a new riverside seating area, a walkway with views over the river, raised planting beds and artwork.
To compliment the new square, St Michael's Parochial Church Council, are keen to develop an enterprise hub in the church hall. It will provide office facilities for fledgling businesses and not for profit organisations, with computers, broadband, phones, fax and printing facilities.
Councillor David Kirton, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Development, said:
"At the moment Mytholmroyd lacks any identifiable town centre. This project would result in a well-designed, high quality public space that would become a focal point for community life in Mytholmroyd. It could be used to host events such as markets and fairs. The scheme will meet a number of the Council's key priorities - safeguarding Calderdale's future and fostering economic prosperity for all as well as improving the quality of the environment."
