Calderdale's Young People with Diabetes
Support Us Supporting Each Other Trust
This year the Mayor of Calderdale, Councillor Arshad Mahmood, has chosen to support Calderdale's Young People with Diabetes - Supporting Us Supporting Each Other Trust. This is a charity set up to help young people come to terms with their diagnosis and move forward gaining confidence and knowledge in their diabetes care.
Diabetes is a life long health condition that requires 24 hour management. It is caused by a lack of a hormone called insulin. Everyone needs this to live and insulin ensures that the glucose (sugar) from the food that we eat is changed into energy for our bodies. We all need energy to walk, run, sleep and grow.
Diabetes can affect anyone at any age and in Calderdale there are 81 young people with this condition. Having a diagnosis of diabetes is life changing and young people and their families have lots to learn as it can affect every aspect of life. It can make them feel isolated and friendships can become difficult.
In Calderdale we are committed to providing the opportunity for all young people to learn how to cope with their condition. We currently run a weekend away for young people between the ages of 10-16 years. This allows them to meet each other in a non clinical friendly environment where they can enjoy trying out different challenging activities. Confidence building is a great part of this. The main aim of this weekend is to have fun while supporting and learning along the way. Young people develop lasting friendships while parents are able to take time out together without the worries of caring for a child with diabetes.
We are passionate about offering this opportunity to all young people with diabetes and aim to raise funds to develop family days for the younger people and social events for older adolescents.
We cannot make the young people's diabetes go away but we can support them in feeling more positive about their future.
