Council Headquarters - Northgate House

As well as acting as the headquarters office for many Calderdale Council departments, Northgate House also provides a base for several local offices serving the Halifax area.

Adult learning

Adult learning is provided through Calderdale Council and delivered by the Calderdale Adult Learning ( CAL) Service. The Service provides courses for adults in Arts and Crafts, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Modern Foreign Languages, Health and Safety, Personal Care, Preparation for Life and Work including Literacy, Numeracy, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and provision for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. CAL also offers Family Learning through partnership arrangements with local schools and children's centres.

Adults' health and social care

Doorways

Doorways is a one stop shop for housing related issues, including homelessness, tenants rights, energy efficiency, small repairs and minor adaptations as well as offering advice regarding tenancy related support, benefits and eventually health and employment. The centre will host the healthy Halifax information shop and will also contain a direct computer and phone link to the Job Centre Plus for public use. Pennine Housing 2000 will also be co-located in the new centre.

Education Welfare Office

The Education Welfare Service provides a channel of communication between home and school and between parents and Local Education Authority in order to ensure that children gain access to, and benefit from educational provision.

The service has particular responsibilities in respect of pupils who experience deprivation or discrimination, together with those who are disaffected or have special educational needs.

Officers working from the Halifax office provide Education Welfare service to pupils who attend schools in the Halifax area.

Please note: Prior appointment is advisable if contact is required with an individual officer.

Register Office

The Registration service is responsible for:

It also provides a certificate service for those requiring a current record of a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership which has taken place in Calderdale in addition to those who are tracing their family tree. Registration records began on 1 July 1837 and the Register Office archives hold all the registers completed in the constituent parts of Calderdale since that date.
