Spring 2007
You said - we did
In February 2006 we asked some questions about traffic and transport issues in Todmorden. Your responses are being used to guide the development of a review of Todmorden town centre that will look at potential improvements in traffic flows, on / off street parking and facilities for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport. We are currently establishing a Steering Group, including representatives from the local community, to take this forward. You were in general agreement with most suggestions such as pedestrianisation of the streets around the Town Hall and improvements to car park signing and access. You disagreed with the suggested extension of parking charges to on-street spaces and your views will be taken into consideration.
We also asked your opinion of a small number of schemes that have been introduced following previous consultation in 2002, including access improvements to the rail station and the Calder Valley Cycleway. Although you generally approved, many of you told us that you were unaware particularly of the new cycling facilities. As a result we have published a free pocket guide, placed a route map on the information board in Todmorden town centre and placed much more information on our website.
Many thanks for your responses. If you have any further comments or would like more information on how the Todmorden Traffic Review is progressing please contact us on telephone 01422 392139 or e-mail: transportation@calderdale.gov.uk.
The survey in January 2005 provided invaluable information on panellists’ use of Halifax Town Centre for both leisure and shopping use. The results were incorporated into the Town Centre Audit produced in late 2005, which is a key document for planning events and changes to the town centre.
Since the survey, Halifax Town Centre Management have been working hard striving to ensure that the town centre is an attractive, clean and safe environment for all town centre users.
Halifax Town Centre Management are particularly keen to ensure people feel safe whilst in Halifax. They are working in partnership with the Police and CMBC Community Safety Partnership to ensure this and have managed to secure funding for the Ambassadors on-street customer service team to continue until December 2008.
Beth Ward, Halifax Town Centre Manager spearheaded Halifax’s first ever entry into the national ‘Britain In Bloom’ competition in 2006. Halifax won silver just behind the city of Bath.

In the October 2005 survey you told us that 94% of you would be willing to separate materials for recycling, so we will be giving some of you a chance to prove your point. We will be carrying out a pilot Food Waste Collection Scheme to test the level of support we can expect from segregating food waste. Food is a highly compostable material and we will soon have a suitable, clean, modern plant nearby, so look out for the scheme running in your area.
You helped us with your views on a number of other ‘waste’ issues, from which we are busy putting action plans in place to ensure improvements to this service. We will tell you about these other exciting new initiatives, which focus on ‘Reduction and Reuse’, in a Newsletter later in the year.
