Household waste
Excess waste
Since starting the new recycling scheme in April 2009, the residents of Calderdale have helped us reach our target of 40% recycling, however, we need to achieve a higher rate of recycling if we are to continue to divert waste from landfill sites. Therefore, Calderdale Council introduced a "no side waste, closed lid procedure" in an attempt to encourage more residents to use the recycling boxes and bags provided to help increase our recycling rate.
So, if your bin is overflowing and you have rubbish (bagged or un-bagged) left at the side of your bin on collection day, this is defined as "side waste". Closed lid means the wheelie bin lid must be shut completely.

If you are a resident that already uses all the recycling facilities and has no side waste then you need do nothing more.
However, if you think you have a lot of rubbish and your bin is overflowing, telephone: 0845 245 7000. The staff can discuss the issues with you and you may find you only require more recycling containers, or if you are a large family (6 or more living in the same house), you may be eligible for a second wheelie bin for your rubbish.
If you would like to request an extra bin, complete and return the application form:

How the scheme works?
If the bin crews find any bin whose lid is not fully closed and / or has excess rubbish at the side:
- If a bin is overfilled, the excess bag / bags will be removed from that bin so the lid is fully closed, then the bags from that bin will be replaced back inside the bin after the bin has been emptied.
- Any excess bags which have been left by the householder at the side of the wheelie bin will not be removed or placed into bins by the crews.
- The wheelie bin will be emptied;
- they will make a note of the address and send this back to our Contact Centre (Streetcare - 0845 245 7000), who will ensure a note is put on our monitoring system, so that when a resident phones to inform us of the excess rubbish being left we will be able to give an explanation as to why;
- if further recycling containers or an extra wheelie bin is required then the appropriate action will be taken to ensure this occurs;
- we will have advisers ready to visit residents that are having difficulties to help them recycle more and waste less.
If excess waste continues to be a problem for a resident and all help has been given then, in extreme circumstances, further action may be taken by the council.
Residents who don't have a wheelie bin
If you don't have a wheelie bin, a maximum of 5 standard issued bin bags will be taken on collection day.
We are currently looking at ways to improve the Rubbish, waste and recycling information on the Calderdale Council website.
Please spend a few minutes completing the online form: Rubbish, waste and recycling survey
