School crossing patrol
The Road Safety Unit runs this service and each day Calderdale’s School Crossing Patrols help thousands of children to cross the road safely on their way to and from school.
There are more than 60 sites throughout Calderdale where School Crossing Patrols operate.
School Crossing Patrol supervisors carry out site inspections and recruit and train applicants. We are always looking for suitable people who want to do something for their community by becoming a School Crossing Patrol or one of our Mobile Patrols.
Applicants must:
- be able to display the School Crossing Patrol sign clearly and to work on your feet for continuous periods of up to 2 hours;
- like working outdoors;
- have good hearing and eye sight (with or without glasses).
All applicants will be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check.
If you would like to become a School Crossing Patrol or want to find out more about the service please ring the School Crossing Patrol Section on 01422 392808. This is also an out of office hours answerphone.
How to use a school crossing patrol
Information for drivers
If you see a School Crossing Patrol standing on the pavement:
- slow down and be prepared to stop;
- you only need to stop if the Patrol is displaying the sign upright;
- always stop when the Patrol is in the road holding the sign upright;
- failing to stop for the Patrol puts lives at risk and is also an offence, contrary to the Road Traffic Act 1988, prosecutable in Court;
- don’t drive off until all the children have crossed and the Patrol has returned to the pavement.
Information for children and parents
On the pavement:
- stand well back from the Patrol;
- wait on pavement until the Patrol instructs you to cross;
- always cross in front and not behind the Patrol.
