Safety on the move for all wheelchair users
Safety on the Move was launched in June 2011 and is another element of Calderdale’s successful ‘Seatbelt On’ campaign. The scheme aims to improve the safety of all wheelchair users travelling in vehicles as passengers – especially taxis. Hackney carriage drivers (who are able to transport wheelchair users) and Calderdale Council’s own transport section have joined the campaign and promotional campaign stickers have been provided to all those transport providers taking part.
Stickers are also available for wheelchair users with the message ‘Please Care. Secure Me & My Chair’.
Making a difference for the residents of Calderdale is particularly important to the road safety team. Through this campaign we are able to support one local resident who wanted us to help her ‘make a difference’ for wheelchair users. Mrs Holgate, a resident in Rastrick, lost her son after being involved in an incident whilst travelling in a taxi. Kristian was a wheelchair user.
