Accident statistics

Accident statistics summary 2007

  1. There has been some improvement in the killed or seriously injured (KSI) total in relation to the 2010 target, but disappointingly, this was offset against slippage with the child and pedestrian KSI targets.  The sharp rise in the chid KSI total is particularly disappointing as good progress had been made in recent years.  The slight rate continues to improve however, and the 2010 target has already been achieved.
  2. The number of road casualties fell significantly in 2007 for both Calderdale and West Yorkshire, where both have recorded their lowest ever totals since the regions were created in 1974.  The falling total of car occupant casualties with slight injury contributed most to the downward trend.
  3. There were 100 people killed or seriously injured (KSI) during the year, and this represents a 19% reduction on the 1994 to 1998 average value.  The total has fluctuated since 2001 with very little sign of improvement in recent years, but the 2007 figure is encouraging as it has reinforced the downward trend.  However, there were disappointing increases amongst the pedestrian and child KSI totals.
  4. The number of slight casualties fell significantly to a total of 760 and the long term trend is downwards.  This year's total is 38% below the 1994~98 average, and the required 10% reduction target has been exceeded by a wide margin.
  5. The total number of pedestrians injured continues to fall, such that this year's figure of 103 is the lowest so far recorded in Calderdale.  Although the pedestrian casualty total (all severities) has fallen, the proportion killed or seriously injured (KSI) has increased to 30.  The rise in the KSI total took place amongst the child and 60+ age groups.  The rise in 2007 is disappointing as the total is once again above the intended target line.
  6. There has been a disappointing sharp rise in the number of child KSI casualties during 2007.  Although no children were killed, a total of 19 were seriously injured.  The total is now above the intended target line and progress towards the 2010 target has slowed considerably.
  7. There were 32 pedal cyclists injured and this figure is virtually unchanged compared with the five year average.  The downward trend through the 1990s has stopped in recent years, and the trend is now fairly flat for both Calderdale and West Yorkshire.
  8. There were 63 motorcycle casualties and this total is maintaining the downward trend of the last three years.  One motorcyclist was killed and a further 14 riders had serious injuries; the total of 15 is maintaining the downward trend.
  9. A total of 624 people were injured in cars and this figure is the lowest recorded since 1992.  The downward trend is thus continuing.  It is the falling number of car occupant casualties that has contributed most to Calderdale achieving its lowest ever road casualty total.  A total of 41 car occupants were killed or seriously injured, and this is a non-significant reduction on the previous five year average of 53.  The underlying trend in KSI casualties is fairly flat.  Casualties aged between 16 and 29 are over represented in the KSI total.
