Birth registration
How to register a birth
The main Acts and regulations governing the registration of births and death are:
- births and Deaths Registration Act 1953 (as amended)
- the Registration of Births and Deaths Regulations 1987 (as amended)
- the Registration of Births and Deaths (Welsh Language) Regulations 1987 (as amended).
A birth must be registered in the district in which the birth occurs, however if a birth occurred outside Calderdale, a declaration can be attested here and forwarded to the Registrar of that district.
Please note: it may take longer for the certificates to be issued following a declaration, as we rely on the postal service to send documents.
Registration must take place within 42 days of the birth.
The baby does not need to be taken to the registrar's office to show that the birth has taken place. The local health authority or the hospital where the birth occurred will notify the registrar of the birth.
