Finding records

Vintage photograph of a couple getting marriedRegisters for each different area are kept in the Register Office for that district. If you know where the event took place, you can apply to the district Register Office. Your local office will have a list of all Register Offices in England and Wales.

Birth, Marriage and Death indexes will give a volume, page number and registration district for each event.  The volume and page number relate only to the storage system at the General Register Office and do not have any relevance in local register offices, however information relating to the year and quarter of the event is critical.
