Eye Candy: New release DVDs for hire

Drag Me to Hell

Sam Raimi is now perhaps better known as director of the Spiderman films than for the Evil Dead series. He returns to the horror genre with a film about a banker - Christine - who refuses to help a sinister old gipsy woman threatened with losing her home. Cursed in retaliation, Susan will be tormented by a demonic entity for three days, and then banished to hell for an eternity of suffering.

This simple premise is the basis of a film that is in turns tense, scary and hilarious. The pace is frenetic, the violence cartoon like. Some may find this fast paced, knockabout variant on the horror genre to be a welcome alternative to some of the more extreme recent titles.

“ Gaudy, ghoulish, this particular creepshow plugs into the EC Comics of the '50s, laughing uproariously in the face of death ” Total Film

Monsters Vs Aliens

This is probably the best animated film from the DreamWorks studio since Shrek, and one of the best family films of the year.

A young woman called Susan is struck by a meteorite and changed into a gigantic monster - referencing the classic B movie “ Attack of the 50 Foot Woman”. Imprisoned with a motley crew of monsters also derived from old SF films, she is called to lead a last ditch attempt to save the world from invading aliens.

The actors voicing the film include Reece Witherspoon as Susan, Hugh Laurie and Seth Rogan - bringing the characters brilliantly to life. Excellent animation and fast moving action make this a real rival to recent offerings from Disney.

Boxed Sets

Recent boxed sets include “Dollhouse”,(the new series from “Buffy” creator Joss Whedon), Series 5 of “The Wire”, Series 4 of “Lost” and Series 1 of “Spiral”.
