From Weaver to Web: online visual archive of Calderdale history

The Weaver to Web site contains around 20,000 digital images illustrating the history of Calderdale.
The material featured includes postcards, maps and photographs, as well as extracts from trade directories, local acts of parliament, handbills, census returns and much more.
The website initially focused on the history of the textile industry in the Calderdale area. Increasingly, however, the visual archive also addresses the wider social historical context, though still within the same region. The site makes possible improved public access to resources and assists in the preservation of rare and fragile material.
The initial creation of the website was made possible by a grant of £106,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, an organisation that redistributes Lottery-derived money to assist in projects for education, health and the environment. Ongoing maintenance and regular additions are now carried out by staff in the Central Reference Library, Halifax.
