Local studies and family history resources

Introduction

The Local Studies section, located in the Reference Library at the Central Library, Halifax, houses a unique collection of some 12,000 items. These include books, newspapers, maps, illustrations, pamphlets and much more, on the history and development of the Calderdale area.

The nucleus of the collection was originally part of the private library of Joseph Horsfall Turner, a local historian and writer. Material has been added over the years and the collection continues to grow, as a result of purchases and donations. Much of the collection is kept behind the scenes, but the library catalogue and themed listings, alongside assistance offered by helpful staff, ensure access to it as required.

All material is for reference only, although copies of some items may be available in the Lending Library.

Other Calderdale Libraries

Brighouse, Hebden Bridge, Sowerby Bridge and Todmorden libraries have significant collections, of interest to the local and family historian. These include books, historical maps, local newspapers on microfilm, pamphlet and photo collections. Other libraries have smaller collections, which may also be of interest.

For details of their holdings contact any Calderdale library.
