Census returns
The first Census that collected individual data was carried out in 1841. Censuses have been held every ten years since this date. Data on individuals is only released one hundred years after it is collected, and so the most recent release has been the 1911 Census.
Census data available from Calderdale Libraries
The Library Service subscribes to the Ancestry web site which offers free online access to the census records for England and Wales for each census year between 1841 and 1911. This is available in all Calderdale libraries.
The Find My Past website also offers access to the 1841 to 1911 census records. This is usually only available in the Reference and information Library, but it can be accessed in Todmorden Library on Wednesdays.
The Central Reference Library also provides access to the 1841-1901 Calderdale area census returns on microform, at times when the West Yorkshire Archive Service, Calderdale is not open. These times are Mondays, 9.30am to 7pm; Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 5pm to 7pm and Saturdays, 9.30am to 5pm
