Hartshead Moor Service Station
Reducing motorway crime
Hartshead Moor Service Area facilities straddle the east and west side of the M62 motorway on the outskirts of Brighouse. The whole site is open 24 hours per day, has approximately 7,500 visitors per week and employs around 200 people.
The issue of crime at Welcome Break Service Station Hartshead Moor was raised at Brighouse Action Planning Team (APT) whilst looking at hot spots of crime in the area.
The Services are on the border with neighbouring authority Kirklees. The service station is subject to a high number of thefts, these range from lorry thefts, shoplifting and taking petrol without payment. The location had recently experienced from a number of high profile crimes such as the theft of a cash machine and the sale of endangered species such as poisonous snakes.
This project was aimed at reducing crime, helping people feel safer and improving the environment focusing on two of the Calderdale corporate priorities;
- To create safer communities with lower crime levels and less fear of crime
- To support diverse communities, building dialogue, understanding and a capacity to work and live together.
A partnership approach was established between the Police, Community Safety and Welcome Break to address the issues for the diverse community that travels through Hartshead. The aim was to work in partnership with the private sector to reduce crime and help the public feel safer by identifying new solutions to ongoing issues.
The Service Area employed a Police Community Support Officer, jointly funded by West Yorkshire Police, Welcome Break and the Calderdale Community Safety Team.
