Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
The Diamond Jubilee will mark the sixtieth anniversary of The Queen’s accession and will be celebrated with an extended bank holiday weekend 2-5 June 2012. Several major events are being planned to take place in London over that weekend.
Our own West Yorkshire campaign to celebrate this great occasion was launched at the Civic Hall in Leeds on Monday 7 February 2011, one year before the start of the Diamond Jubilee year. The Lord Lieutenant hopes that the people of West Yorkshire will plan and organise events all over the county, particularly over the June weekend but, if appropriate, at any time during that year. It is particularly hoped that younger people will be keen to get involved, as well as local community groups and businesses.
For anyone wishing to organise a community event, special guidance papers have been issued by Eric Pickles MP (Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government). Mr Pickles does not want potential organisers to be put off by the fear of unnecessary red tape or rules and regulations.
The Diamond Jubilee is a magnificent anniversary not only for Her Majesty, but for our Country too - a once in a lifetime event. Only one other British monarch, Queen Victoria, has ever celebrated a Diamond Jubilee, as long ago as 1897.
There will be plenty of events running throughout West Yorkshire to honour the Diamond Jubilee within the five Metropolitan District Council areas (Kirklees, Calderdale, Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford).
