Parking Services
Introduction
The service provides and manages on and off-street parking throughout Calderdale, with a total of just over 3,300 spaces in 71 public car parks. See Where to park.
There are over 1200 streets and roads within Calderdale with some type of parking restriction in place. We strive to provide a quality service and any problems or concerns that are reported to us will be investigated, however, we receive a high volume of calls and these are prioritised subject to the available resources.
Over 30 of these car parks are free, and most of the charged car parking is in Halifax, with over 1,300 charged spaces. There are approximately 320 charged spaces in Sowerby Bridge, Brighouse, Elland, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden. Over the past few years, in accordance with the objectives of the Local Transport Plan, we have given priority to short stay parking for shoppers and visitors to the town centres at the expense of all day commuter parking, which is usually confined to car parks further away from the town centres.
Charges also apply on just over 900 on-street spaces in Halifax town centre through 136 pay and display machines. On street charges also apply in Hebden Bridge to 124 spaces through 14 pay and display machines.
There are a number of Residents Parking schemes covering around 120 streets throughout the District. This service costs the Council around £30,000 to administer each year.
Our objectives
As a service we are responsible for ensuring that the parking provision in Calderdale is used correctly, responsibly and that the best use is made of on and off street car parking space to the maximum benefit of the local community. We also ensure that the Council's car parks are maintained to an appropriate standard within the constraints of the available budget.
The service strives to provide convenient, well maintained, surfaced, secure and clean car parking that the public is confident to use, at a reasonable cost. To date, over 20 of our car parks have been awarded 'The Safer Parking Award' by Park Mark. In addition to this we are also a member of the British Parking Association (BPA).
